Young Playwrights Programme
Fighting Words Cork at Graffiti Theatre Company are excited to announce that applications are now open for the Young Playwrights’ Programme.
The Young Playwrights Programme will give eight young people aged 14-19 years the chance to participate in a series of playwrighting workshops which will culminate in a professionally directed and performed staged reading of their working at The Everyman as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival and in association with Landmark Productions and The Everyman’s staging of Louise O’Neill’s award winning novel Asking For It.
Between January and June 2018, the eight young playwrights selected will – over a series of Saturday workshops – get the the opportunity to work with professional writing mentors to help them create a short piece that will be staged by professional actors and directors at the Cork Midsummer Festival. In addition, the young playwrights will also be invited by The Everyman to attend selected performances throughout the programme, to inspire and inform their work.
Award-winning Cork author Louise O’Neill is a resonant and authentic voice, recognised and respected by teenage readers. Louise is a patron of Fighting Words Cork and Asking For It has been described as “one of the most important books for young people ever written. Deeply moving, incredibly written.”
The young playwrights will explore what moves them to write, to create characters, to tell stories that inform us more about their world.
“We want to facilitate young people to use the language of theatre to write for their generation, to share their perceptions on a stage where people listen. We are asking young playwrights to have their say. We are asking young audiences to listen and respond.”
The Fighting Words programme was developed by Roddy Doyle and Sean Love in 2009 in Dublin to provide a space to support creative writing among children and young adults. In January 2017 the programme was launched at Graffiti Theatre Company.
Fighting Words Cork at Graffiti encourages young people interested in the Young Playwrights programme to contact Graffiti Theatre Company for the information and application forms. Applications close on December the 11th and the eight successful applicants will be notified on the 15th of December.
